Finding treasure on the Camino de Santiago

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I am fascinated by the doors I walk past on my Camino.  They range from extremely beautiful to really garish and ornamental. Each door is a statement about its owner whether they be present or past. Each door holds the possibility of something unknown.  It could be amazing,it could be terrible, but it is all possibility. And that is what the Camino does for one, or is doing for me, more than ever (I’ve always been a ‘possibilist’), it is opening my eyes to the endless possibilities and worlds that exist out there that I haven’t even begun to dream of.  And I am not just asking travel, etc, I am talking about the possibilities of life and how it should and could be lived. We all have doors that we have to open inside us, around us and ahead of us.  We simply need to identify the doors we want to open and work with the possibility that it presents to us.  This could be the door of love, the door of marriage, the door of parenting, the door of your vocation, the door of health, the door of pleasure, the door of travel, …….  You get the picture I am sure.

As I walked alone today, with a few aches and pains, I was reflecting on my beautiful journey and all the doors I have seen and photographed and all the doors I want to open and explore behind on my return. I am in Sarria today (a place where most Pilgrims start their journey to earn a Compostela, as you only have to walk 100 kilometers to earn the prized document), and I have realised that my actual Camino ends in five days tomorrow.  When I start tomorrow I have 112 Km’s to go. As I look at these beautiful doors while I walk, I see that my inner Camino is only beginning and what exciting opportunities I have to open all these beautiful doors in my life.

CAMINO GIFTS; the simple pleasure of walking alone and just reflecting and listening to my music, the joy of reaching my destination before 13h00 and the ice cold aqua con gas that I had, the decadence of a Sunday afternoon sleep, the pure pleasure of an uninterrupted 20 min face time call with Jacqui and beautiful encouraging what’s apps from Sarah.
